The Excerpt …
Context: Mack, the account director at Eternal Forever, is struggling with customer inertia in the marketplace. He needs people to sign up now while they’re alive, if they want to remain online after they’re dead.
On paper, Eternal Forever was a unique offering in the marketplace: an online profile management agency who took over and looked after your digital profile when you were dead. But people didn’t get it. Well, they got it, but they didn’t want to get it. People didn’t like thinking about life after death. They wanted life after death, but they didn’t like to dwell on Facebook status updates being done without them being around. They wanted selfies with themselves in it… not to think about a world when they wouldn’t be around.
And so the initial buzz of the idea had been great. Investors had flocked to them (and still did), but trying to get past the user inertia and explain why they needed to sign up now while still alive, was way more difficult than they’d first thought. Getting sign-ups was hard enough, but trying to extract money for their subscription-based ‘afterlife insurance management plan’ was like trying to herd a pack of unicorns into an abattoir. Impossible didn’t even begin to sum up the insurmountability of the problem and Mack was stuck. He’d spent a fortune commissioning fancy consumer insight research trying to ‘unlock understanding’, only to be met with a wall of silence. People knew they were going to die, and yes they wanted to sign up to Eternal Forever, but now? Right now? They were still alive. That could wait until tomorrow, couldn’t it?
About the Book
Fame, glory and… foul play!
Jessie was a shop worker dreaming of the big time, then YouTube found her. But staying in the limelight requires meticulous management: pop stars are made not born.
With awards night approaching, the pressure’s on for Tito, Jessie’s manager, to whip her into shape. Getting so close wasn’t in the contract, but then neither was him being murdered in Spain.
Alone and scared of the negative publicity, Jessie turns to Mack, her account manager at Eternal Forever, the UK’s first digital legacy management agency. But Mack’s got his own issues: the company’s fast running out of cash, his key developer’s on the turn and a blogger’s suicide looks suspicious.
With the assistance of J-Pop, Mack’s assistant and wannabe reality TV star, Jessie turns sleuth. But in a world where everybody’s watching, it’s hard to escape. Reputation is everything and some people will do anything to protect it.
